Qualities of a Healthy Relationship – I believe most people goes into a relationship with the mindset that they will be treated right. A healthy relationship provides a conducive environment for love, peace and understanding to thrive. Relationships are not always bed of roses. It can grow from being unpleasant to being pleasant depending on how committed the parties involved are towards making sure that it works. Just like a growing tree planted in the garden needs to be watered, so does a relationship.
I can remember clearly when couples who were celebrating their 50 years anniversary were asked the secret to their long lasting relationship and their response was “we accept our mistakes and we don’t wait till the next day to resolve any issue in our relationship.”
The most important qualities of a healthy relationship are; mutual understanding, respect, empathy, commitment, trust, honesty, love, communication which I will discuss in details here. You need to be in a relationship with someone who will never take you for granted.
A healthy relationship is a combined effort. Don’t heap all it takes for your relationship to work on your partner. Always try to reciprocate the effort of him or her in trying to build a healthy relationship with you. It gives great joy and peace of mind when you are well treated in your relationship.
Qualities of a Healthy Relationship
1. Love
The love that exists in a healthy relationship is unconditional. It is not one-sided. It is also deeply rooted in the heart of the two people involved in the relationship. When there is Love, hatred is far away, understanding becomes the order of the day. In short, the relationship will sail smoothly.
The reason while some relationship crashes is when the relationship is not based on love but rather on certain expectations from one or both of the partner. For instance, some people are into a relationship based on what they are getting or intends to get from their partner. Such a relationship will not stand the taste of time because it is not built on love but on material things which can get exhausted at any time. A healthy relationship is built on the strong foundation of true love.
2. Trust
There is no way you will have a strong or healthy relationship with someone whom you cannot trust. Trust is an important virtue of a healthy relationship. The truth of it all is that most times, it takes time to build trust in a relationship. Once one partner in a relationship feels betrayed, it becomes difficult to build trust again in that relationship.
Having a high level of trust in your relationship gives you peace of mind. It makes you to believe in your partner knowing fully well that he or she can’t betray you. Entrusting your heart to someone you can fully trust is the best thing that can happen to anyone.
3. Respect
Everyone loves and deserves to be respected. No matter the difference in age in your relationship, you should know how to respect each other. Respect they say, is reciprocal. Respect is important for relationship to continue to thrive. What respect entails is knowing how to speak to your partner, knowing the right words to use even when you thinks that he or she is wrong. Displaying the right attitudes towards your partner.
Lack of respect in a relationship gives rise to various forms of abuses. Value your partner despite his or her background, educational qualifications and other differences between you once you have accepted to be in a relationship with him or her.
4. Empathy
Empathy is another quality of a healthy relationship that should not be underrated. You don’t have to feel nonchalant about what your partner is going through. Show your concern when needed, brace him or her up when necessary. If you have the available resources to help your partner when he or she is in need of such, do not relent in doing so. Prove to your partner that you are willing to be with him or her in thick and in thin.
5. Commitment
In a healthy relationship, both partners shows their concern in making sure that their relationship works. Commitment in a relationship works well when it is balanced. You need to make your partner realize how ready you are to make sure that everything goes well in your relationship. Commitment is an act, therefore, you need to prove it.
6. Honesty
Honesty is an important virtue that every healthy relationship is built on. It pays to be someone who can be trusted with his or her words. Just like trust, honesty makes your partner to believe in you and your words. It makes you a responsible partner. In marriages, honesty gives room for both financial growth and mental growth.
7. Communication
One thing that every healthy relationship have in common is good communication. No matter how careful you are in a relationship, most times things can get out of hand. Where there is no good communication, little issues can give rise to the end of a relationship. Expressing your concerns, doubts gives you peace of mind, it gives you a clear mind about your relationship. Communication gives you clues on what your partner feels about you and the status of your relationship.
