There is a great power in the tongue and thus great care should be taken when uttering words with it. The tongue has the ability to build and destroy, to provoke and console, to separate and unite. You can withdraw your actions but you can’t withdraw your words. Life and death is in the power of the tongue. Remember, God created the universe with words, that is to tell that there is a great strength in the words that you utter with your tongue. An adage also says that ” If you want to live long, control your tongue.”
James 3:16 says “The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire and itself set on fire by hell.”
The Bible made us to understand that the tongue is sharper than a two edged sword. It pierces like the sword, the wounds inflicted by it may not be healed or the words be reversed.
Proverbs 12:18 says ” Reckless words pierces like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. “
Many have lost great opportunities as a result of the words being uttered by them, attracted enemies unknowingly to themselves, there is a great need for you to control your tongue, because if you don’t, your tongue will control you.
How To Utilize The Power of the Tongue Effectively
1. Filter Your Words
Don’t just say anything that comes into your mind, select your words and also communicate them in a gentle manner, the lesser words you choose, the less mistakes you will made to avoid misuse.
Psalm 19:14 says “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight , O Lord my Rock and my Redeemer.”
2. Be Apologetic When You Use The Wrong Words
When you are talking to someone, always be mindful of the person’s reaction, this will let you observe whether the person is comfortable with your words or not. Don’t feel adamant or unperturbed about this. No matter how careful you may decide to be, sometimes a slip of the tongue may occur, you may utter unintentional words, as soon as you realised this, apologize immediately.
3. Avoid speaking lies and try to always speak the truth
Keep your tongue away from lies and stick to saying the truth always no matter the situation. Be someone that can be trusted by his or her words. Be consistent with your words and you will be greatly rewarded for this.
Proverbs 12: 19 says “Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts for a moment.”
4. Encourage those that needs encouragement
Instead of causing more wounds to them, use your words to console and not to wound, to bless and not cause, to encourage and not to discourage those who need it. Don’t use your words to deceive, to steal or to cheat people.
