At one time or the other, we would have had a fight, misunderstanding or quarrel with one another. Sometimes, the cause of the misunderstanding may come from us or the other person. After such misunderstanding sometimes, we find it difficult to talk or associate with one another. And also our mind may tell us to go back and settle the matter, irrespective of whom the fault is from. But taking the huge step towards reconciliation becomes a problem. Bearing that in mind, here are some qualities which will enhance the reconciliatory process.
Courage: The person to take the first step should be courageous enough to face the other person. If the person is in fear or doubt, this may affect the process.
Willingness to forgive completely: Before you start the reconciliatory process, be sure and ready to forgive completely. Don’t harbour any evil in your mind as this may result to future reoccurrence of the misunderstanding.
Ability to try as many times as possible: If at first the person did not agree, you shouldn’t give up, keep on trying until the misunderstanding is resolved.
Bible’s view of reconciliation
The Bible also revealed to us the importance of reconciliation. According to the book of Matt:18:15-17 “If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother. But if he does not listen, take one or two along with you, that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses. If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church, let him be to you as a gentile and a tax collector”. According to this Bible verse, we should try as many times as possible.
Also the book of Matt: 5:23-24 ” So if you are offering your gift to the altar, And there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled with your brother, and then come and offer your gift.
This is to tell us that God does not want us to be in enmity with anyone, but rather be willing and ready to forgive at all times. Hebrews 12:14 “Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord”.
